In September 2001, you might know this part, I met a boy and made him a candle for Christmas. But you might not know the rest of the story.
The year turned and Valentine's Day 2002 came along. This was where the real magic happened. I had candle making materials leftover from all the Christmas gifts. Since he loved the first candle so much and I was proud of the first candle, I wanted to make him a second. Plus I wanted to experiment.
Nothing says true love like a heart. A rose can come pretty close ;).
The craft store carried a heart shaped mold and it ended up in my supplies. (I still have it). I spent time working on this beautiful heart candle. I called places and asked questions and spoke to people I'd met who knew a lot about candles. I finally got the candle to look incredible! I loved the scent, but I was giving it to a guy. I had this lingering thought in my mind, "would a guy like it?".
There was only one way to find out. It was research time!
I ran Valet at a local Casino. Almost everyone I worked with was male. So, I took it to work. Everyone smelled it and turned it over. They checked it out and critiqued this red heart. And then, something magical happened.
All the men loved it. They kept saying how lucky my boyfriend was to get this. They absolutely loved the scent I'd used and then, Todd, my coworker, asked me to make him a specialty candle. And I said "Yes!!".
And that's how Shortie's kept moving forward. There was a goal (to make great candles for Todd) and I simply took small actions toward it. This was the next step that pushed sharing candles with the world.
Nick, "the boy" loved the heart shaped candle. It was a beautiful Valentine's Day gift. I loved his happiness this candle created! This was our first Valentine's Day candle! What I secretly loved even more, was the research and development that followed.
Every year, including the first, he's given me red roses. They mean a tremendous amount. I love the smile on his face and coming home to them on the kitchen table.
The smell of roses brings love to mind. It's a memory of a smile and true care for another. It's also, simply put, a really beautiful flower!
When I was working on the True Rose scent, I remember standing there, in middle of the warehouse, and after working on our scent over and over, I finally got it right! It was absolutely perfect! It was that moment when you look at your coworkers and your mouth drops and you say "Oh my gosh! This is it! This is it! Smell it!".
And now, you get to enjoy it as well. It captures many emotions and feelings of love, fun, excitement, care and kindness. It wraps our homes in this warm, outdoor, Rose oasis. It's a smell that everyone enjoys!
Here's to roses on Valentine's Day 2026!
