What if the sky wasn't our limit?

When you were young do you remember the conflicting statements of "the sky's the limit?" Followed up by the negative phrase "you're pushing your limits, kid!"

I believe that part of our fun journey during our life here is to see how far we can push (what we perceive are) our limits. To do this – to create this push – we have to recognize what's holding us back and how to maneuver around it.

The other day my son, Peak, and I went for a run at Rancho San Raphael Park here in Reno, NV. We ran a mile and then walked another mile. We ended up down around this small lake where all the ducks hang out.

There was a chain-link fence and you could tell that many ducks and small animals had slid under many parts of this fence. However, there was one duck trying relentlessly to fit under a part of the fence where the fence was still almost to the ground. The duck could only fit his head and neck under the fence. We watched this duck try again and again to pull his head out and then put it down again. Try to squeeze through. Pull his head out and try to squeeze through. We watched for about 5 minutes. We went for a small walk and came back. As we came back, the duck finally stopped, looked at me like I was in his personal space, and walked away. He was pissed at himself, the fence, and probably at his buddy who'd been standing next to him watching – oblivious as to how to create a different result so the first duck could slide under the fence.

I had to laugh...he was 3 inches from a spot, on BOTH sides under which he could slide. He was so determined and therefore had become narrow minded and self-sabotaging as to how to accomplish his goal.



This made me stop and recognize this quality in myself. I have had several seemingly large decisions to make and I am being narrow minded and limiting as to how we can accomplish these goals. I am getting my head just under the fence, but my space is too small I can't fully slide through. Where is it that I'm not looking to the larger spots under the fence? The spots that I can easily slide under and reach my goals?

When we can only see the fence, then we're in that moment of "you're pushing your limits, kid." When we can spot those easy holes under the fence, the skies can't even hold you down!
